Thai Union Group PCL, a major player in the seafood industry, has taken significant steps towards ocean conservation. In honor of World Oceans Day, the company organized clean-up activities across 11 countries and four continents, collecting 17 tons of marine debris. This initiative is part of Thai Union’s SeaChange 2030 sustainability strategy aimed at removing 1,500 tons of ocean-bound plastic.
Adam Brennan, Chief Sustainability and Communications Officer at Thai Union, stated: “As a global seafood company, sustainability is central to how we operate. Ocean plastics are a growing global threat, with an estimated 200 million tons polluting our oceans due to poor disposal and waste management practices. Reducing plastic in the ocean is a key pillar of SeaChange 2030.”
The clean-up efforts involved over 700 volunteers from Thai Union and its subsidiaries like i-Tail Corporation PCL. They were joined by representatives from brands such as Chicken of the Sea and King Oscar. Public and private sector partners also supported these activities.
In Thailand, collaboration included various local organizations such as the Samut Sakhon Provincial Administrative Organization and local schools. Prad Kerdpairoj, Director of Sustainability for Pet, Feed & Marine Ingredients at Thai Union said: “This year alone, our activities expanded to 11 countries across four continents… These efforts not only remove harmful waste but also build long-term environmental awareness.”
Supawadee Sittijamroenkun, General Manager of i-Tail Corporation emphasized their commitment: “Our clean-up efforts go beyond collecting trash – they inspire a shared responsibility among government, business, and citizens to protect our oceans for future generations.”
Collected waste was sorted according to International Coastal Cleanup guidelines. Recyclable materials were processed by local companies while non-recyclables were converted into fuel through partnerships with specialized entities.
