Thai Union Group has announced plans to change its mackerel sourcing strategy starting in 2026, in an effort to help protect the Northeast Atlantic mackerel stock (Scomber scombrus), which is currently considered at risk.

The company will begin to focus on sourcing more abundant and sustainable mackerel species, such as Scomber colias. This adjustment is part of Thai Union’s SeaChange 2030 sustainability strategy and comes in response to recent scientific guidance from the International Council for the Exploration of the Seas (ICES). The ICES has recommended a significant reduction in catches of Scomber scombrus to ensure the long-term health of the species.

Thai Union also remains active in industry advocacy efforts. As a member of the North Atlantic Pelagics Advocacy Group (NAPA), the company supports calls for coastal nations managing the fishery to set catch quotas that follow scientific advice during upcoming negotiations.
